Biography
Saint Raphael is one of three archangels explicitly named in Catholic scripture and tradition. The name 'Raphael' means 'God heals,' reflecting his primary role as God's instrument of divine healing and restoration. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael guides young Tobiah on a perilous journey, offering protection and spiritual instruction while disguised as a human companion. This biblical narrative established Raphael's archetypal association with travelers and guides. He also heals Tobiah's father Tobit from blindness through divine intervention. Catholic theology identifies Raphael as one of God's principal messengers, standing before the divine throne in service to humanity. Unlike other archangels mentioned primarily in apocalyptic contexts, Raphael's role emphasizes personal, intimate divine care. His healing ministry encompasses both physical ailments and spiritual afflictions. Throughout Christian tradition, Raphael has been invoked by physicians, nurses, and those seeking wholeness. His feast day celebrates the Church's belief in God's accessible healing power through angelic intercession.
Prayer
Prayer to Saint Raphael the Archangel
O glorious Archangel Saint Raphael, great and powerful prince of the heavenly hosts, be thou merciful unto me in my weakness and infirmities, and suffer me not to be overcome by mine enemies, the evil spirits of the air. Crush the demon of impurity beneath thy feet, and shield me with thy mighty sword against all the snares and temptations of the evil one. I humbly beseech thee to aid me in all my spiritual necessities, and I earnestly entreat thee to render me victorious in all my struggles against hell, and to grant me the grace ever to praise God with the holy angels in that beautiful kingdom which is reserved for the elect. Amen.
