Biography
Blaise was an early Christian martyr and bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, venerated since at least the 5th century. Little verified historical documentation exists, but tradition holds he was a physician before his ecclesiastical calling. During the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Licinius, Blaise was arrested and imprisoned. According to hagiographic accounts, he miraculously healed fellow prisoners and even restored life to a child who had choked on a fishbone, establishing his association with throat ailments. He allegedly performed numerous healings and conversions despite torture. Blaise was martyred by beheading, though some accounts describe more elaborate execution methods. His veneration spread throughout Christendom, particularly in Eastern Christianity and medieval Europe. The blessing of throats on his feast day remains a widespread Catholic practice. His intercession for animals derives from tradition that wild beasts visited him in prison. Though historical details remain obscure, Blaise exemplifies early Christian martyrdom and has inspired devotion for nearly two thousand years.
