Biography

Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was an Italian mystic and friar whose revolutionary approach to Christian spirituality transformed the medieval Church. Born to a wealthy merchant family, he experienced a spiritual conversion during military captivity and subsequently renounced his possessions to live in radical poverty. In 1209, Pope Innocent III approved his Rule, establishing the Franciscan order dedicated to evangelical simplicity and service to the poor. Francis's distinctive spirituality embraced creation as God's gift, famously preaching to birds and viewing all creatures as siblings. His mystical encounters with God, including receiving the stigmata in 1224, deepened his passion for Christ's suffering. He promoted peace actively, attempting to reconcile warring factions and even visiting the Muslim Sultan during the Crusades. His emphasis on joy, humility, and direct experience of God's love revitalized religious fervor and influenced centuries of spiritual renewal, making him one of Christianity's most transformative figures.
