Biography

Nicholas of Flüe (1417-1487) was a Swiss hermit and political figure who profoundly influenced his nation. Born in Unterwalden, he lived as a farmer and militia commander before experiencing a spiritual calling at age 50. He withdrew to a hermitage in the Ranft valley, where he lived in extreme austerity for nineteen years, allegedly without consuming food except the Eucharist. Despite his seclusion, Nicholas became an influential advisor during Switzerland's political crises. In 1481, when the Swiss Confederation faced dissolution over territorial disputes, Nicholas's counsel at the Diet of Stans helped broker peace and preserve the union. His reputation for sanctity, combined with his practical wisdom, made him a bridge between the spiritual and temporal realms. He was canonized in 1947 and remains Switzerland's patron saint.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Nicholas of Flüe

O Saint Nicholas of Flüe, hermit and mystic, who withdrew from the world to seek union with God, and whose life was a beacon of contemplation and peace, we humbly beseech you to intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty. Grant us the grace to seek God's will in all things, to find peace in prayer and solitude, and to live lives of holiness and devotion. Help us to turn away from worldly distractions and to fix our hearts upon the eternal truths of our faith. Through your powerful intercession, may we grow closer to Christ and become instruments of His peace in our troubled world. Amen.
