Biography

Theophan (1815-1894) was a Russian Orthodox bishop and spiritual father who became one of the most influential ascetic theologians of the 19th century. Born George Govorov, he studied theology and became a monk, eventually serving as bishop of Tambov and other dioceses before retiring to the Vysha Monastery as a recluse in 1866. For the last 28 years of his life, he engaged in intensive prayer and wrote extensively on the spiritual life, particularly emphasizing sobriety of mind and union with Christ. His voluminous correspondence with spiritual seekers and his biblical commentaries profoundly shaped Orthodox spirituality. Though confined to his cell, his influence extended throughout Russia and beyond, earning him recognition as a great doctor of the Church and model of hesychast mysticism.

Prayer

Prayer to Saint Theophan the Recluse

O venerable Father Theophan, thou lamp of Orthodoxy and guide of souls seeking the inner light of Christ, we beseech thee to intercede for us before the throne of God. Grant us the grace to cultivate the prayer of the heart, to turn from the distractions of the world, and to grow in contemplation of divine truth. By thy holy example of solitude and spiritual wisdom, lead us toward union with our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
