Biography

Gregory Palamas (1296-1359) was a Byzantine theologian and monk whose theological work systematized the mystical prayer tradition of hesychasm. Born into nobility, he renounced worldly life to become a monk at Mount Athos, where he engaged in the Jesus Prayer and apophatic contemplation. Palamas developed sophisticated theological articulations of divine energies and essence, defending the hesychast tradition against critics who deemed it pantheistic. His theological synthesis, particularly in the Triads in Defense of the Holy Hesychasts, reconciled mystical experience with Orthodox theological precision. He taught that the divine energies—distinct from God's essence—are truly accessible to the human person through grace. Ordained bishop of Thessalonica in 1347, he suffered imprisonment and hardship for his teachings. Gregory's theology became foundational to Orthodox spirituality, establishing contemplative prayer as legitimate Christian practice. His feast honors his defense of the experiential dimension of Orthodox Christianity.
