Biography

Felicity (d. 203) was an enslaved African Christian woman martyred alongside Perpetua in North Africa. Though enslaved and bearing no legal status, Felicity possessed unshakeable faith and courage. Pregnant when imprisoned for Christian faith, she prayed urgently to give birth before her scheduled execution, fearing her pregnant condition might prevent martyrdom and result in her child's death. She delivered her baby in prison and entrusted the newborn to a Christian woman. Witnesses report she bore her labor pains with spiritual joy, declaring that suffering for Christ brought her peace that no torturer could destroy. In the arena at Carthage around 203 AD, Felicity was executed alongside Perpetua and other Christians, maintaining serenity and faith throughout. The "Passion of Perpetua and Felicity" honors both women's complementary testimonies: Perpetua represented educated, noble Christian womankind, while Felicity embodied enslaved Christian women's profound dignity and courage. Together, they demonstrated that faith transcends social status and that the powerless possess spiritual authority and strength.
