Biography

Born Jeanne-Françoise Frémyot in Dijon, France (1572), Jane Frances was a noblewoman and devoted wife until her husband's death in 1601. Widowed at thirty-two with four young children, she struggled with grief but eventually found spiritual guidance under Saint Francis de Sales around 1604. Together they founded the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610, a contemplative order designed for women unable to endure stricter monastic life. Jane Frances served as the community's superior for thirty-four years, demonstrating remarkable administrative skill and spiritual depth. She balanced maternal concern for her nuns with rigorous spiritual discipline, emphasizing gentleness and obedience. Her correspondence with Francis de Sales reveals a profound, mutually enriching spiritual partnership. Jane Frances struggled with her own inner darkness yet persevered in faith. Canonized in 1767, she represents the sanctification of ordinary domestic life and shows how widows and mothers can achieve extraordinary holiness through contemplation and service.
