Biography

Irenaeus (130–202) was a Greek bishop and theologian of Lyons in Gaul, revered as one of the most important early Church Fathers. Originally from Asia Minor, he studied under Polycarp, a disciple of the Apostle John, connecting him directly to apostolic tradition. As bishop of Lyons, Irenaeus became Christianity's primary defender against Gnosticism through his masterwork Against Heresies. He articulated crucial theological principles: apostolic succession, the authority of Scripture and Tradition, and the development of doctrine. Irenaeus synthesized Christian theology by emphasizing God's unified plan of salvation through Christ across Old and New Testaments. His concept of recapitulation showed Christ as fulfilling and perfecting God's creation. He promoted unity within the early Church despite regional theological diversity. Martyred during Septimius Severus' persecution, Irenaeus profoundly influenced subsequent theological development and remains foundational to Catholic doctrine and ecclesiology.
