Biography

Our Lady of Lourdes commemorates the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes, France, between February 11 and July 16, 1858. Bernadette, a 14-year-old peasant girl, reported eighteen visions of a beautiful lady who identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. During these apparitions, a spring emerged that would become famous for miraculous healings. The Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1862. Lourdes has since become one of Catholicism's most important pilgrimage sites, attracting millions of visitors annually seeking physical and spiritual healing. The waters from the grotto have been associated with numerous documented cures, though the Church carefully investigates each claim. Our Lady of Lourdes represents God's compassion for the suffering and the power of faith and prayer in addressing human afflictions.

Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfortress of the Afflicted, thou knowest my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Look upon me with mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, thou didst make it a privileged sanctuary, where the sick are healed and sinners are converted. I come before thee with lively faith and burning love. Pour down upon me the precious gifts of health and holiness which flow from thy maternal heart. Let my body be healed if it be God's holy will, but above all, let my soul be purified and sanctified. Help me to live a holy life, to avoid sin, and to grow in virtue. I promise to honor thee always as my loving Mother, to be devoted to thy Immaculate Heart, and to work for the conversion of sinners. Amen.
