Biography

Paul of the Cross (Paolo Francesco Danei) was born in 1694 in northern Italy and founded the Congregation of the Passion, a contemplative community focused on meditating on Christ's Passion. After experiencing a profound spiritual vision, he dedicated himself to religious life, receiving the habit in 1720. He established his congregation to promote devotion to the suffering Christ through prayer and preaching. Though never ordained a priest until age 38 due to ecclesiastical delays, Paul became renowned for his spiritual direction, mystical experiences, and healing presence. He experienced profound visions and supernatural phenomena throughout his life. His writings on contemplative prayer influenced Catholic spirituality significantly. Paul emphasized the transformative power of meditating on Christ's Passion and suffering. He lived ascetically, practicing severe mortifications while radiating remarkable gentleness toward those he served. Paul died in 1775 and was canonized in 1867. His feast day celebrates his enduring legacy of mystical spirituality and pastoral care.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Paul of the Cross

O glorious Saint Paul of the Cross, who didst spend thy life in contemplation of the Passion of Jesus and in spreading devotion to His sufferings, we beseech thee to obtain for us a deep love of the Cross and a true spirit of penance. Help us to bear our trials with patience and resignation to God's holy will, and to find in the sufferings of Christ the source of our salvation and sanctification. Through thy powerful intercession, may we grow in holiness and persevere unto the end. Amen.
