Biography

Paulinus (353–431) was a wealthy Roman aristocrat and governor who experienced spiritual conversion after a vision of Saint Felix. He renounced his considerable fortune, freed his slaves, and eventually settled in Nola near Naples where he became bishop. A prolific poet and correspondent, Paulinus used his literary talents to promote Christian theology and spirituality. He established a monastery and sanctuary dedicated to Saint Felix, making Nola a pilgrimage destination. His letters to figures like Augustine and Jerome reveal deep theological reflection and pastoral concern. Paulinus exemplified the Christian ideal of voluntary poverty and dedicated himself to serving the poor and sick. His life demonstrated that worldly wealth could be abandoned for spiritual richness, influencing monastic traditions and inspiring later reform movements.
