Biography

Saint Agatha was an early Christian martyr born in Catania, Sicily, during the 3rd century. A noblewoman of considerable wealth and beauty, she dedicated herself to Christ and refused marriage proposals from the Roman proconsul Quintilian. When she rejected his advances, he had her tortured severely, including mutilation of her breasts. She remained steadfast in her faith throughout her suffering. According to tradition, while imprisoned, Saint Peter appeared to her and healed her wounds. She eventually died from her injuries, earning veneration as a martyr saint. Her feast day became particularly significant in Sicily, and she is invoked for protection against fire and volcanic disasters. Her endurance under persecution made her a symbol of Christian fortitude and female virtue in the early Church.
