Životopis

Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774-1821) was America's first native-born citizen to be canonized. Born into an affluent New York Episcopal family, she married William Magee Seton and raised five children before his death left her widowed and impoverished. Her grief and spiritual seeking led to conversion to Catholicism in 1805, a decision that cost her family relationships and social standing. In Baltimore, Elizabeth founded the Sisters of Charity in 1809, establishing the first American sisterhood. She opened Saint Joseph's Academy, pioneering Catholic education in the United States and demonstrating innovative pedagogical methods. Through the Sisters, she founded orphanages and charitable institutions serving the poor and abandoned. Despite financial hardship and the loss of two daughters to tuberculosis, Elizabeth maintained unwavering faith and maternal tenderness toward her community and those they served. Her life exemplified how personal suffering, accepted with grace, becomes redemptive. She radically reoriented American Catholicism toward education and social service.
