John Baptist de la Salle (1651-1719) was a French priest and educational reformer who revolutionized teaching methods in the 17th century. Born into nobility, he renounced his wealth and comfort to serve impoverished youth, founding the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He developed innovative pedagogies including simultaneous instruction, teaching in vernacular languages rather than Latin, and emphasis on moral education alongside academics. De la Salle established teacher training seminaries, establishing the first formal education for instructors. His methods transformed education from an elite privilege to an accessible path for poor children. He faced significant opposition from established institutions threatened by his reforms. De la Salle's legacy fundamentally changed how teaching was approached and professionalized. He canonized in 1900 and declared patron saint of educators.
