Životopis
Bede the Venerable (673-735) was an English Benedictine monk, scholar, and Doctor of the Church whose works profoundly shaped medieval learning and Christian history. Entering Jarrow monastery as a child, he spent his entire life in scholarly pursuits and monastic life. Bede was exceptionally learned, mastering Latin, Greek, and Hebrew while studying theology, scripture, patristics, and natural sciences. His most celebrated work, the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, remains the primary source for early English history and Christianity in Britain. He also wrote biblical commentaries, hagiographies, homilies, and works on chronology and natural phenomena. Bede's meticulous scholarship established high standards for historical accuracy and source documentation. His monastery at Jarrow became a center of learning influential throughout Christendom. Though he suffered chronic illness, he maintained his scholarly output until death. He died reciting scripture and was revered as a saint during his lifetime. Canonized in 1899, Bede exemplifies the integration of intellectual excellence and spiritual depth.
