Životopis

Martin I (d. 655) was pope during one of Christianity's most turbulent theological periods, facing the monothelite controversy threatening Christian unity. Elected pope in 649, he immediately convened a synod condemning monothelitism, the heretical position claiming Christ possessed only one will. His firm doctrinal stance directly opposed Byzantine Emperor Constans II, who favored monothelitism for political unity. The emperor responded by arresting Martin, subjecting him to mock trials, torture, and exile in Crimea. Despite severe mistreatment and deteriorating health, Martin maintained unwavering commitment to orthodox Christology and papal independence. His imprisonment lasted years, and he endured immense suffering, ultimately dying in exile. Martin's courageous defense of doctrinal purity against imperial coercion established crucial precedent for papal autonomy. He was venerated as martyr despite dying naturally, his witness inspiring future popes resisting secular pressure on religious matters.
