Biography

Saint Lawrence was a deacon in Rome during the reign of Emperor Valerian in the 3rd century. When Pope Sixtus II was martyred in 258, Lawrence was imprisoned and ordered to surrender the Church's treasures. Instead, he gathered the poor, sick, and marginalized—declaring them the true treasures of the Church. This act of defiance and profound faith led to his torture and execution by grilling, likely around August 10, 258. According to tradition, he maintained his faith and even his characteristic humor throughout his suffering, famously telling his executioners to turn him over as he was done on one side. His feast day became one of the most significant in the early Church calendar, and he remains venerated as a model of charitable service and martyrdom, embodying the deacon's call to serve the most vulnerable.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Lawrence

O glorious St. Lawrence, deacon and martyr, who didst love the poor and suffer with patience and joy for the faith of Christ, we beseech thee to intercede for us before the throne of God. Grant us the grace to serve the needy with generous hearts and to bear our crosses with fortitude and charity. Help us to grow in faith and love, that we may one day join thee in the glory of Heaven. Amen.
