Saint Lawrence was a deacon in Rome during the reign of Emperor Valerian in the 3rd century. When Pope Sixtus II was martyred in 258, Lawrence was imprisoned and ordered to surrender the Church's treasures. Instead, he gathered the poor, sick, and marginalized—declaring them the true treasures of the Church. This act of defiance and profound faith led to his torture and execution by grilling, likely around August 10, 258. According to tradition, he maintained his faith and even his characteristic humor throughout his suffering, famously telling his executioners to turn him over as he was done on one side.
