Biography

Lazarus of Bethany was the brother of Martha and Mary, whose resurrection by Jesus Christ stands as one of the Gospels' most profound miracles. When Lazarus died, his sisters' grief and Christ's arrival four days after burial set the stage for demonstrating divine power over death. Jesus's command to Lazarus to "come forth" resulted in the dead man rising, bound in burial cloths. This miracle profoundly impacted witnesses and accelerated opposition from Jewish authorities threatened by Christ's authority. Lazarus's resurrection prefigured Christ's own Resurrection and provided tangible proof of Jesus's divinity. Post-Resurrection traditions suggest Lazarus became a bishop in Cyprus and later a martyr. His extraordinary experience of death and restoration granted him unique spiritual authority as living witness to Christ's redemptive power. Lazarus represents Christian hope in resurrection and transformation, embodying the promise that faith in Christ conquers death itself.
