Životopis

Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) was an Italian bishop, theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists who became one of Catholicism's most influential moral theologians. Initially trained as a lawyer, he experienced a spiritual conversion and was ordained a priest in 1726. His pastoral work revealed the harshness of rigoristic moral theology, prompting him to develop a more merciful approach to confession and moral guidance. Alphonsus authored 'Moral Theology,' which balanced doctrinal integrity with pastoral compassion, becoming the standard text for centuries. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) to minister to poor rural populations, emphasizing accessible catechesis and compassionate spiritual direction. Despite suffering from severe arthritis and other maladies, he maintained tireless apostolic activity until his death. Alphonsus was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871, profoundly shaping Catholic moral teaching and pastoral practice toward greater mercy and accessibility.
