Životopis

Edith Stein (1891-1942) was a German-Jewish phenomenologist who converted to Catholicism and entered the Discalced Carmelite order, becoming Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. A brilliant philosopher influenced by Edmund Husserl and Thomas Aquinas, she integrated modern philosophy with medieval scholasticism in her writings on women's education and spiritual life. Following her religious profession, she continued academic work until Nazi persecution of Jews intensified. Recognizing her Jewish heritage made her a target despite religious vows, Stein sought refuge in the Dutch Carmel, but was arrested during Nazi raids in 1942. She perished in Auschwitz, witnessing to Christ through martyrdom. Canonized in 1998, she exemplifies the integration of intellectual excellence, contemplative spirituality, and sacrificial love. Her writings on phenomenology and contemplative prayer remain influential. Named co-patroness of Europe, Stein represents the tragic suffering of Holocaust victims while proclaiming the redemptive power of faith and self-offering in communion with Christ's passion.
